The Weever is abundant from Norway to Madeira and also includes the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions. This type of prickly pear grows up to 40 cm long and is characterized by slanting yellow and blue stripes and a yellow-white background. It has a strong back-curved barb on the gills. The short dorsal fin with venom rays is conspicuously black. The firm white meat is drier, but very tasty and is especially suitable for frying or in soups. In Italy, 'zuppa di pesce' belongs to every soup.
